GCSE Spanish Tutors

Spanish is the most taken modern language at GCSE, and the one where regular spelling lulls students into skipping grammar. We have no Spanish specialist today, so tell us what you need and we will be straight.

GCSE Spanish at a Glance

GCSE Spanish is graded 9 to 1 and entered at one of two tiers. Modern languages keep tiers, unlike most subjects outside maths and science.

Four skills are assessed: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each carries a quarter of the grade, so one weak skill costs a lot.

The speaking test is conducted by the school rather than sat in the exam hall, which is why rehearsing it out loud matters so much.

Syllabus

What GCSE Spanish Covers

The themes are set by the board. Vocabulary and tenses run through all of them.

01
Identity and relationships
Family, friends and describing people
02
Local area and travel
Town, region, holidays and transport
03
School and study
Subjects, routine and plans after Year 11
04
Work and future plans
Jobs, ambitions and further study
05
Global issues
Environment, healthy living and social problems
06
Grammar and tenses
Past, present and future, with justified opinions
Where the marks actually go
The subjunctive and the preterite against the imperfect decide the top bands in writing. Vocabulary alone will not reach them.
The papers

How GCSE Spanish Is Examined

Four assessments, each worth a quarter, all taken at the same tier.

Listening

Listening paper

Recorded extracts with questions in English and in the target language. Heard twice, then the paper moves on.

A quarter of the gradeBoth tiers
Speaking

Role play and photo card

Conducted by the school, usually before the written papers. The format is fixed, so it rewards rehearsal.

A quarter of the gradeTaken in school
Reading

Reading paper

Authentic texts with comprehension questions, plus a short translation into English.

A quarter of the gradeBoth tiers
Writing

Writing paper

Structured tasks and a translation. Tenses and justified opinions are what lift an answer into the top band.

Where Spanish Marks Are Lost

Most lost marks come from one past tense used for everything, opinions left unjustified, and a speaking test met cold on the day.

One past tense for everything

Spanish has two, and the examiner expects both. Using the preterite throughout caps the writing mark.

Opinions without reasons

Saying something is interesting earns little. The mark comes from the porque that follows it.

Gender and agreement

Adjective agreement is easy to learn and easy to lose marks on. It is checked in every written answer.

Speaking left until last

The role play and photo card have a fixed shape. Rehearsed they are predictable; unrehearsed they cost a grade.

How we would run it

How we would run a Spanish hour.

We would start from the weakest skill

Any tutor we match would check all four skills first, then build lessons around the one costing the most marks. Students usually know which it is.

SpeakingTensesVocabularyBoth tiers

Spoken every lesson

Students answer out loud from the first minute, because fluency only comes from using the language.

Writing marked weekly

A short written task each lesson, marked against the criteria before the next one, so errors do not set.

Progress You Could Actually Check

Whoever we match you with works the way the rest of the team does. These four reports come as standard.

  • Notes after every lesson
  • Topic checklist, red to green
  • Monthly progress report
  • A recording of each lesson

Questions

GCSE Spanish Questions

Do you cover this subject at the moment?

Not on the core team. Tell us what you need and we will either source a specialist from our wider network or say plainly that we cannot help.

Is it really tiered?

Yes. Modern languages keep tiers. Foundation caps the grade at 5, so the entry decision matters.

When is the speaking test?

The school runs it, usually earlier than the written papers, which is why rehearsal has to start well in advance.

Is Spanish easier than French?

The grading is the same and Ofqual holds the boards to one standard. Spanish spelling is regular, which makes reading aloud easier early on.

Which languages do you teach?

French, with one specialist covering AQA and Pearson Edexcel. That page is linked below.

Which subjects do you actually cover?

Thirteen GCSE subjects with specialists on the team, across AQA and Pearson Edexcel. You will find them further down this page.
