GCSE Combined Science Tutors

Combined Science is the double award most students take. Our specialists teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics separately, so tell us what you need and we will say what we can arrange.

The qualification

Combined Science at a Glance

Combined Science covers biology, chemistry and physics in less depth than the separate sciences, and is worth two GCSEs rather than three.

The result comes as a double grade, such as 6-6 or 7-6, with the two numbers never more than one grade apart.

Students are entered at Foundation or Higher. Foundation caps the award at 5-5, so the entry decision matters as much as it does in maths.

Syllabus

What Combined Science Covers

The same three sciences, with some of the separate science content removed. These are the areas the papers examine.

01
Biology paper 1
Cells, organisation, infection and bioenergetics
02
Biology paper 2
Homeostasis, inheritance, variation and ecology
03
Chemistry paper 1
Atomic structure, bonding, quantitative and energy changes
04
Chemistry paper 2
Rates, organic chemistry, analysis and the atmosphere
05
Physics paper 1
Energy, electricity, particle model and atomic structure
06
Physics paper 2
Forces, waves and magnetism, without the space content
Where it differs from triple
Less content and no space physics, but the same required practicals and the same style of question. The exam technique is identical.
The papers

How Combined Science Is Examined

Six written papers, two in each science, all sat at the same tier.

AQA Trilogy

Six papers

Two biology, two chemistry and two physics papers, each carrying 70 marks and an equal share of the award.

Two GCSE grades

The grade is a pair, such as 6-6 or 7-6. Sixth forms read it as two results when setting entry requirements.

Foundation caps at 5-5

A student aiming above a 5 has to be entered for Higher, so the mock papers are worth reading carefully.

The required practicals are tested through written questions, which is where many students lose accessible marks.

Where Combined Science Marks Are Lost

Most lost marks come from practical detail, six-mark answers that list rather than explain, and calculations without units.

Practical detail

Naming the control variable and the repeat earns marks. Vague answers about being accurate earn none.

Six markers that list

These need linked reasoning. A list of true statements rarely reaches the top band however correct it is.

Units left off

Physics and chemistry calculations carry a mark for the unit. It is the cheapest mark on the paper to drop.

Describe against explain

Describe asks what happens, explain asks why. Students lose whole answers by doing the first well.

Our specialists teach the separate sciences

Biology, Chemistry and Physics each have specialists on the team, and the exam technique is the same. Tell us which of the three is costing the grade and we will say what we can arrange.

One science at a time

Most students are weak in one of the three rather than all of them. The hour goes where the marks are going.

Practice set every week

Each lesson ends with questions on the topic just covered, marked before the next one so nothing is assumed.

Questions

Combined Science Questions

Do you cover this subject at the moment?

Not on the core team. Tell us what you need and we will either source a specialist from our wider network or say plainly that we cannot help.

Is Combined Science easier than triple?

It carries less content, not easier questions. The same command words and the same required practicals appear on the papers.

What does a grade like 6-5 mean?

Two GCSE grades from one course. The pair is never more than one grade apart, and sixth forms count both.

Which tier should my child take?

Foundation caps the award at 5-5. Anyone aiming higher needs Higher tier, and the mock papers usually make it clear.

Can you help with one science instead?

Yes. We have specialists in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and those pages are linked below.

What is on your current subject list?

Thirteen GCSE subjects with specialists on the team, across AQA and Pearson Edexcel. You will find them further down this page.
