GCSE Geography at a Glance

GCSE Geography is graded 9 to 1 with no tiers, so every student sits the same papers and the whole range is open.

AQA sets three written papers. Papers 1 and 2 each last 1 hour 30 minutes, carry 88 marks and are worth 35% of the grade.

Paper 3 is different. It carries 76 marks and 30%, and examines the fieldwork students did themselves rather than content they revised.

Syllabus

What GCSE Geography Covers

Two content papers and one applied paper. The case studies are what students are actually examined on.

01
Natural hazards
Tectonics, weather hazards and climate change
02
Physical landscapes
Rivers, coasts and glacial landscapes in the UK
03
Urban issues
Growth of cities, sustainability and urban regeneration
04
Economic development
The development gap, Nigeria and the changing UK economy
05
Resource management
Food, water and energy supply and demand
06
Fieldwork and skills
Two enquiries, map skills, graphs and data response
Where the marks actually go
Case studies carry the top bands. Named places with real figures score; general descriptions of a flood or a city do not.

How GCSE Geography Is Examined

Three written papers, all sat at the same level, with fieldwork examined rather than submitted.

Physical environment35% of the grade

Paper 2

Paper 3

Issue evaluation from a pre-release booklet, plus questions on the fieldwork the student actually carried out.

Geographical applications30% of the grade
Fieldwork

Examined, not submitted

Students answer written questions about their own two enquiries, so the detail of what they did has to stay in the memory.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

Where Geography Marks Are Lost

Most lost marks come from case studies without figures, fieldwork half remembered, and nine-mark answers that never reach a judgement.

Case studies without detail

Naming the place is the first mark. Dates, figures and specific consequences are where the rest of them sit.

Fieldwork half remembered

Paper 3 asks about the student's own enquiry: the method, the sampling and what went wrong. No textbook can supply it.

No judgement reached

The longest questions ask students to assess or evaluate. Listing both sides without deciding caps the mark.

Map and graph skills

These carry reliable marks, and most students practise them least.

How we would run it

What an hour would look like.

We would start from the mark scheme

Any tutor we match would mark a recent paper first and find whether the problem is case study recall, fieldwork or exam technique.

Case studiesFieldworkNine markersPast papers

Case studies drilled

Each one reduced to named facts and figures a student can actually recall under exam pressure.

Answers written, then marked

Students write the longer questions in the lesson and watch them marked against the bands, which closes the gap between knowing and scoring.
