Why GCSE Tutors

Six things that separate an English specialist.

Literature asks students to argue from memory. They need the quotations in their head and a way of using them, and those are two separate problems.

Your set texts, not any text

Lessons work on the plays and novels your school actually entered, so no time goes on a book your child will never answer on.

Quotations made usable

Students learn short, flexible quotations that answer several questions, rather than long passages that fit none of them.

Essay shape taught directly

A clear line of argument is the difference between the middle and top bands. It is a structure, and it can be taught.

Unseen poetry practised

The one part nobody can revise for. Students rehearse a method on poems they have never read, until it feels routine.

Context used, not bolted on

Marks come from context that explains the writing, not a paragraph about the Victorians dropped in at the end.

Parents see the detail

Notes after each lesson and a monthly report, so you know which texts are secure and which are not.

The qualification

GCSE English Literature at a Glance

GCSE English Literature is graded 9 to 1. There are no tiers, so every student sits the same paper and the whole grade range is open.

AQA sets two written papers. Paper 1 covers a Shakespeare play and a nineteenth century novel. Paper 2 covers modern texts and poetry.

Students answer on texts they have studied without the books in front of them, so quotations have to be remembered as well as understood.

Syllabus

What the Literature Papers Ask For

The set texts change by school, but the skills the mark scheme rewards do not. These six are what lessons build.

01
Shakespeare
Close reading of an extract, then the play as a whole
02
The nineteenth century novel
Character and theme argued across the whole book
03
Modern texts
A full essay from memory on a play or novel studied in class
04
Poetry anthology
Comparing two poems by theme, voice and method
05
Unseen poetry
A method for poems never studied, including a comparison
06
Context and writer method
Why the writer made the choice, not just what happens
Where the marks actually go
The top bands reward a sustained argument about the writer's choices. Retelling the plot, however accurately, sits in the lower half.

Practice From Real Literature Papers

Lessons work through genuine past papers and their mark schemes, not imitation questions written to look like them.

Mark schemes

Marked as an examiner would

Essays come back with the band stated and the reason given, so a student knows what lifts an argument rather than guessing.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

Every lessonThe difference-maker
How a English Literature lesson runs

An hour built around the essay your child has to write.

We start from the mark scheme, not a model essay

Your tutor marks a recent essay first and finds whether the problem is evidence, argument or timing. The lesson is built from that answer.

Set textsQuotationsUnseen poetryEssay structure

Planned, written, marked

Students plan and write in the lesson, then watch it marked against the criteria, so the gap between knowing and scoring closes.

Quotations tested weekly

We check recall at the start of every lesson, because an argument without evidence cannot reach the upper bands.

Exam technique

Where Literature Marks Are Really Lost

Most lost marks come from retelling the story, writing without evidence, and leaving the last question unfinished because the first ran long.

Retelling, not arguing

Describing what happens is the most common cap on a grade. The marks come from why the writer chose to show it that way.

Evidence left out

Points made without a quotation stay in the lower bands however sensible they are. Every point needs its words from the text.

Context bolted on

A paragraph of history at the end earns little. Context scores when it explains a specific choice the writer made.

The clock

Students who write a brilliant first essay and a rushed second lose more than they gained. We practise both to time.

You See Every Literature Lesson

A single essay grade says little on its own. These four reports show which text is secure and which still needs work.

  • Topic checklist, red to green
  • Monthly progress report

Questions

GCSE English Literature Questions

Do you teach our school's set texts?

Yes. Tell us the play, the novel and the anthology cluster and we match a tutor who teaches those texts.

Which boards do your Literature tutors teach?

All three teach the AQA course and one also teaches Edexcel. Each profile lists the boards that tutor covers, subject by subject.

My child cannot remember quotations.

Most cannot, at first. Short quotations that work for several questions are far easier to hold than long passages.

How do you prepare for unseen poetry?

With a repeatable method practised on poems the student has never read, so the unfamiliar stops being a shock.

Are the books allowed in the exam?

No. Students answer from memory, which is why we test quotation recall every lesson rather than leaving it to revision.

How many hours a week do you suggest?

One 60-minute lesson weekly suits most students. Two is common in the term before the exam, or after a weak mock.
