Malaysia GCSE Tutoring, With Grades Explained

English GCSEs are graded 9 down to 1, and 9 is the top. If that scale is unfamiliar, it is very hard to tell whether your child is doing well or not.

The grading scale

Reading an English GCSE Grade Correctly

Parents educated elsewhere often assume a numbered grade works like a percentage. It does not, and misreading it leads to either false comfort or unnecessary panic.

Nine is highest

The scale runs from 9 at the top down to 1. It replaced letters, so a 9 is above the old A star rather than below it.

Four is a pass

Grade 4 counts as a standard pass and 5 as a strong pass. Many sixth forms ask for 5 or above in the subjects being continued.

Not a percentage

Boundaries move each year with the difficulty of the paper. A raw mark of 60 can be a different grade in different years.

Years 9 to 11

Reaching a grade 4 or 5

Secure the common topics and finish the paper. Most of the gap at this level is unanswered questions rather than hard content.

Harder topics plus technique. Long answers have to reach a conclusion and calculations have to be shown properly to earn method marks.

Tutors Who Will Name a Realistic Grade

Asked what grade is reachable, our tutors answer from the marks rather than from optimism. An inflated target is no kindness in February of Year 11.

Working Out Where Your Child Stands

01

Share the grades

Send the latest report or mock grades. Without them, any conversation about targets is guesswork on both sides.

02

Translate them

A specialist explains what those numbers mean, what the next grade needs, and whether the target is realistic this year.

03

Aim at one grade

Lessons target the next grade up rather than a leap. Each grade has its own obstacles and they have to be cleared in order.

Who Can Explain the Grade You Received

A tutor unfamiliar with English GCSEs can teach the content and still misread the grade. Knowing what a 6 requires is a separate kind of knowledge.

Malaysia questions

Grading Questions From Malaysian Families

Is grade 9 the best or the worst?

The best. The scale runs 9 at the top down to 1 at the bottom, which trips up almost everyone meeting it for the first time.

How do the numbers compare to the old letters?

Broadly, a 7 sits around the old A and a 4 around the old C. The top end was deliberately stretched, so 9 is harder to reach than an A star was.

What grade counts as passing?

Grade 4 is a standard pass and 5 a strong pass. Which one matters depends on what comes next, since sixth forms set their own entry requirements.

Does a grade 6 mean sixty percent?

No. Grade boundaries are set each year against the difficulty of that paper. The raw mark needed for a 6 changes from one year to the next.

What grades do sixth forms usually ask for?

Commonly a 5 or 6 in the subjects being continued, and often a 4 in English and Maths. The school or college sets its own bar, so ask them directly.

Our school reports in percentages. How do we convert?

You cannot convert reliably, and a tutor guessing at it is misleading you. Mock grades issued by the school are the more useful signal.

Is a realistic target the same as a low one?

No. A realistic target is the next grade up, which is usually reachable. Aiming three grades higher tends to produce despair rather than effort.

Can a grade move in one school year?

One grade commonly, two sometimes with a full year and real work. Promising three in a term would be selling you something we cannot deliver.
